Soho Based Services

The Hungerford runs a range of open access and treatment services from our premises in Soho. Our Tier 2 & Tier 3 sevices are targeted at homeless drug users and aims to provide motivation and direction to the least motivated clients through a wide and varied range of interventions.

What is Low Threshold Treatment?
Low threshold treatment means a combination of group work, one-to-one keyworking, counselling, complimentary therapies, and life-skills training designed to build on clients’ motivation for change and particularly targeted at the hardest to reach clients.

The programme is flexible and tailored individually to each clients needs. It can be constantly altered through negotiation with keyworkers to maximise the level of the client’s management. Clients can attend as often or as little as they wish and may choose for themselves those parts of the service which they feel is most beneficial to them.

We can work with people who are currently still using drugs, as well as those who have recently stopped, but are needing support to stay clean and begin to rebuild their lives.

How are clients referred?
Clients can refer themselves, either by telephoning or attending the daily reception service that runs from 2-5pm every weekday. Here they will be introduced to a worker, undergo a full assessment of their needs and the goals they hope to attain as a result of treatment at the Hungerford, and be introduced to the full range of services on offer. We also accept referrals from probation officers / arrest referral teams / social workers / counsellors / GP’s / Street Services Teams / homelessness agencies / client’s friends and families. The Hungerford will also maintain ongoing liaison with referring services via joint work.

Where is the Hungerford?
The Hungerford is at 32a Wardour Street, London W1D 6QR. The project is situated in the centre of the West End and is easily accessible from Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus stations. Telephone 020 7437 3523 or e-mail: hungerford@turning-point.co.uk for further information.

What services are available?
Complimentary therapies such as auricular acupuncture, shiatsu massage and homeopathy providing safe, natural ways in which clients can relax and focus and treat withdrawal effects without recourse to drug use.

Weekly one-to-one counselling sessions, which enable clients to explore some of the reasons for their problematic drug use and begin to make sense of their difficulties in a safe, confidential environment.

Weekly surgeries in the Hungerford for clients wishing to access prescribing services, in-patient detoxification and residential rehabilitation. Clients undergo full clinical and funding assessments and are referred on.

Weekly surgery by a specialist nurse, providing Hepatitis C testing, Hepatitis B inoculation, advice and onward referral for any other liver related conditions.

There are one-to-one regular key-work sessions (usually weekly) in which the clients can discuss their problems privately and with their named keyworker, and slowly build-up the skills and motivation needed to begin to later and reduce their drug use. Keyworkers are also able to travel to their clients from time to time, and can accompany them to assessments interviews, visits to rehabilitation units etc.

Lifeskills services are designed to build on clients’ hidden strengths and talents and develop professional skills.

SohoSafe is a culturally appropriate activity and support group, run weekly by and for Black and Asian people. SohoSafe provides creative activities, group discussions, film projects, and access to computer and Internet technology.

Rise! is a regular afternoon group for clients with a history of living on the streets, designed to address issues of particular relevance to homeless people who are experiencing problems with drug use.

W1 is a comprehensive internal and external women’s service including a regular women’s space which provides creative workshops, e-mail and internet facilities plus visits from external organisations.
