Course Summary:

This interactive one-day course will allow participants the opportunity to explore issues surrounding safer injecting. Participants will gain an understanding of the process of injecting and an insight into the complications and risks that can arise for the injector who is engaged in unsafe injecting practices. It will also highlight interventions that can be used when discussing safer injecting practices with the injector.

This course is aimed at all professionals / volunteers working with injecting service users. The course will be of particular benefit for workers who have some understanding of substance misuse and would like to develop some specialist knowledge and skills relating to Injecting drug users.

Learning Objectives:
  • Increase knowledge on basic physiology related to veins, arteries, nerves and muscles
  • The process of injecting – I.V, I.M, S.C
  • Commonly-used injecting techniques and risk assessment
  • Injecting equipment used and associatedparaphernalia: barrel, needle size for different sites etc
  • Awareness of Injecting related infections and injuries Increasing effective working with injecting drug users
  • Limitations of safer injecting knowledge
  • Developing good practice interventions and strategies of harm minimisation
