Course Summary:

The course is designed to give an introduction to counselling interventions in a substance misuse context. Participants will briefly explore some basic generic counselling skills, commonly used models and also investigate goal-orientated working, clinical support and the question of outcome monitoring. Participants will leave with an overview of the relevant issues and a clear understanding of minimum good practice in substance misuse counselling services.

This course is aimed at all professionals / volunteers working within the social care field who have an interest in counselling. The course will be of particular benefit for workers who wish to develop basic skills & techniques involved in a person-centred counselling approach.

  • To increase awareness of basic counselling skills and techniques
  • Counselling, advice giving, crisis intervention, key working – what are the differences?
  • To increase knowledge of Motivational Interviewing / Solution Focused approach
  • Developing realistic goal setting skills
  • Awareness of professional boundaries and clinical supervision
  • Counselling in a QuADS framework
  • How to measure outcomes in counselling
