Course Summary: As workers from a wide variety of backgrounds come into contact with individuals who use drugs, it has become increasingly important to gain a realistic understanding of how drugs impact upon the individual and society. This course is designed for anyone wishing to get an up-to- date understanding of the drugs world and develop greater confidence and awareness of drugs and related issues. This course is aimed at all professionals/volunteers working within the social care field such as Housing, Employment, Criminal Justice System etc. The course will be of particular benefit for workers who wish to identify drug-use amongst the clients they work with and develop their skills in making effective referrals to treatment services. ‘Drugs Awareness’ can be also be taken as a foundation course for some of the more advanced courses in Hungerford Training Programme or as a 2-day course in combination with the advanced drugs training course. Learning Objectives: To understand definitions, informal terminology and prices Increase knowledge of the effects and health risks How to recognise signs of substance misuse Prevalence trends and patterns of use in the UK Drugs & the law To explore the context of drug-use To develop skills for reducing harm Increase awareness of diversity & drug-use To learn how to access support, advice & treatment services
