Course Summary:

Services need to be accessible to the entire community and culturally sensitive to the needs of clients from a diverse and multi-cultural society.

Focusing on professional practice and on the development of skills in cultural competency, this interactive one-day course will explore how our lack of cultural awareness can often serve as a barrier to accessibility for BME groups.

It is relevant to professionals or client workers working directly from any background seeking to reflect upon their practice and develop interventions that more appropriately address the needs of the wider communities.

Learning Objectives:
  • Identification of service gaps and barriers to accessibility
  • Reflection on identity, prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination
  • Increase awareness of how our attitudes may impact on our assessments
  • Cultural considerations when working with BME clients
  • Enhancement of assessment skills
  • To develop cross cultural communication skills
  • Development of good practice when working with BME clients
